POPULATION OF INDIA: For TNPSC and Other Exams

INTRODUCTION

India occupies 2.4% of the world's land area but supports over 17.5% of the world's population. At the 2001 census 72.2% of the population lived in about 638,000 villages and the remaining 27.8% lived in more than 5,100 towns and over 380 urban agglomerations. 

India reached 255 million according to the first census taken in 1881. India is the second most populous country in the world, with over 1.27 billion (1.278,119,445) people,  more than a sixth of the world's population. The China is on the top with 1.36 billion (1,360,044,605) people. India represents 17.31% of the world's population, India is projected to be the world's most populous country by 2022 and is predicted to have more than 1.53 billion people by the end of 2030.

India's population has exceeded that of the entire continent of Africa by 200 million people. However, because Africa's population growth is nearly double that of India, it is expected to surpass both China and India by 2025.

THE YOUNG INDIA

More than 50% of the current population is below the age of 25 and over 65% below the age of 35.he average age of an Indian will be 29 years, compared to 37 for China and 48 for Japan; and, by 2030, India's dependency ratio should be just over 0.4

  • 15–64 years 63.6% (male 381,446,079/female 359,802,209) (2009 est.)

The Birth Rate is 22.22 (Child Births Per 1,000 People Per Year)

  • 65 and over - 0.90 male(s)/female (2009 est.)

The Death Rate 6.4 (Deaths Per 1000 Individuals Per Year)

THE FERTILITY RATE

The Fertility Rate is 2.72 children born/woman and Infant Mortality Rate is 30.15 deaths/1000 live births

THE LITERACY RATE

The literacy Rate of India is 74.04%, with Male Literacy Rate  at 82.14% and Female at 65.46%. Kerala has the highest Literacy Rate of India at 93.9%, Lakshadweep (92.3%) is on the second and Miziram with 91.6%  is on the third position. Tamil Nadu with 80.33% of Literacy Rate.

THE SEX RATIO

India has 940 female per 1000 males. Kerala with 1058 with highest sex ratio, Pondicherry 1001 is second and Chattisgarh with 990 and Tamil Nadu with 986.

India has 383 people per.sq.km
